Choosing Lighting

Choosing lighting isn’t about just choosing something that looks good in the shop or online, nor is it just about the light that lights a room most efficiently: it is about finding the lighting that looks great and suits your room and your tastes and lights that room in the way you want, this will rarely be trying to get as bright a light as possible so you only have to have one light for each room.

Each room in your home will probably have a different styles and different lighting. Kitchens, bathrooms, dining rooms and sitting rooms are all used in different ways not forgetting bedrooms and studies as well of course where you have particular uses for lighting such as reading before going to sleep or lighting your work on your desk.

There are of course different types of lights, wall sconces, pendant lights, chandeliers, table and desk lamps and floor lamps. Often you will want a variety to give you flexibility. If you have a few table lamps, a floor lamp, wall sconces and a big central chandelier in a room you will rarely use them all at once. You may use the main lights when you have friends round, table lamps for a bit of light while you are watching TV but without glare and a big floor lamp for a warm glow from a corner. That’s just the sitting room though, the kitchen is a workspace in many ways so more than any other room really apart from maybe a workshop or study, you need lights to be practical. Practical and elegant can go together though: spotlights and lights under your cabinets are very practical and ideal for kitchens: lamps certainly don’t work well in a kitchen easily getting knocked and things spilt on them. A nice big shaded light hanging down though can look great: either over a central console where you may be preparing food or on a table where you may sit and eat as well as doing various household tasks.

If people often go for practical in their kitchen in the bathroom they barely register that there is a choice other than recessed spotlights. The fact that electrics must be carefully sealed away in bathroom doesn’t mean you can’t be more adventurous. Shades are fine as long as they aren’t going to rot or mold: such as fabric, paper or other organics. Glass is ideal especially if the light is sealed within the glass to keep off the humidity and moisture and glass will not corrode like metal parts might.

Of course lighting outside of the home in a business such as a restaurant is even more vital than it is in your home. In a restaurant people will look through the windows and see if they like the ambience before going in. Too bright and they won’t go in especially if they want a nice relaxing romantic meal, too dark and they will think they won’t be able to see people, especially if in a big group and the place may just look dead and quite dingy.
